Following the recent feat from Wizkid’s still buzzing concert AfroRepublik concert which took place in London.
Davido has proven that you can have your original sound and still sell global! Wizkid is cementing that fact already.
Long before now, international labels have always known that Nigerian acts are a good export to the west – global; but investing in them and selling them has always been a hard nut to crack – well that’s for them.
Wizkid released his 3rd studio album mid 2017; Sounds From The Other Side, but this came with lots of questions even though it still had those little stints of that “Wizzy” vibe. It truly as it was named – Sounds From The Other Side. The album was filled with sounds from the western world, or in Wizkid’s words – the Other Side. Good music lovers felt the album, but then a certain type of Wizkid wasn’t included in the album.
Following Davido’s recent Back to Basics tactic, Wizkid is trailing the same path and is not giving a hoot, neither is he raising his foot from the gas pedal any time soon. They are now championing a successful cause of selling African music to the world without changing or alternating sounds.
Performing at the fest last night was Wizkid bringing on memories from way back, talk about; Azonto, No lele and a lot other street jams he’s had in the past and to no surprise, the crowd cheered and sang along to almost all the songs.
Then you start to wonder, “Why change his sound?” in the first place?
The greatness of last night’s performance and series of Davido’s achievements have proven that “African Music is Unique” and doesn’t need to change to appeal to any market !
Shutting down the 02 arena on the night of the UEFA Champions League, even with an English team in the finals isn’t just a feat, but an incredible one to be talked about. He did this in London!
Embrace your roots, #BackToBasics!
